Puerta de la Esperanza
Holyoke 2001
This mixed use development restored two multistory, brick buildings in downtown Holyoke and added two new three-family houses to the residential area a block away. One of the existing buildings was vacant and had been an eyesore for a number of years. A furniture store occupies the first floor of the other, with apartments on the upper three floors. Both existing structures are large and imposing, and their restoration, including long neglected architectural details, has had a major impact making these commercial blocks much more attractive for shoppers and residents. The rehabilitated buildings with 12 and 15 units along with the new buildings contain 26 two-bedroom and 7 three-bedroom units.
The nonprofit developer, Nueva Esperanza, Inc., has a significant presence in the South Holyoke neighborhood having developed over 350 units of new or rehabilitated affordable housing. The proposed project links their existing properties with the commercial area along Main Street.
